Internet Is Not Just a Decoration

Although posted already 5 months ago, what comes close to an eternity in internet terms, I have just watched the whole 20 minutes video interview with New York media professor Clay Shirky by Der elektrische Reporter.

Shirky talks about social networks and the resulting collapse from multiple to one single identity, privacy, the future of investigative journalism and disruptive innovations, etc. looking at it from very refreshing angles, at least for me. Some samples:

“The biggest misunderstanding now is the idea that the internet is a decoration or new addition to contemporary society”

“The thing that’s keeping me awake at nights is investigative journalism…movie reviewers sports casters. the bloggers are fine for that. They are doing a better job in many cases then the magazines. But hardcore, months-long investigative journalism is really hard to create in any other way than in the current system.”

Shirky.com has list of his writing about the internet. Most of it is pre 2003 though.
